Lincoln Park student performs at Carnegie Hall in New York City

Nathanael Turner

MIDLAND — Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School music student Nathanael Turner recently played at New York City’s Carnegie Hall with the 2017 Honors Performance Series Orchestra.

Qualified students were invited to apply after being nominated by a music teacher familiar with their accomplishments.

A Lincoln Park junior, Nathanael was nominated by Todd Goodman, artistic education director, and selected as a result of achievements demonstrated on his application and audition recording.

Nathanael’s primary instrument is the violin and he is the concertmaster with the Lincoln Park Orchestra this year. He has been a member of Lincoln Park’s music program since seventh grade.

Nathanael participates in a youth chamber group, Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras (TRYPO) at Duquesne University. Every other week, he takes a 90-minute private lesson with Irene Cheng, first violin in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

The Honors Performance Series assembles some of the world’s most elite young musicians to perform under the baton of master conductors at Carnegie Hall, one of the world’s most celebrated concert venues. Selected finalists had the opportunity to work and learn from renowned conductors as they prepared for a special performance on Feb. 5. Finalists also spent time networking with peers and experiencing the sights and performance arts of New York City.

His parents, Daniel and Stacey Turner of Brighton Township, Pa., said they are “very proud” of his accomplishments.

“He’s worked very hard to get where he’s at. His life, believe it or not, for a 17-year-old boy, is violin,” Stacey Turner said. “That Lincoln Park would even give him this opportunity to be nominated is amazing.”
