Senior Services recognized for diabetes education

NEW MANCHESTER–Hancock County Senior Services has been recognized for its work to promote diabetes education.

The agency recently became one of the few to be accepted into the Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The achievement means Senior Services has met all the criteria required for full recognition as a DPRP site.

“It’s noteworthy that only 5 percent of all such organizations nationwide receive this distinction,” said Executive Director E. Mark Knabenshue, singling out Education and Training Coordinator Marla Simmons for praise.

The Senior Services program includes a class for people who meet the following criteria: have a 50 percent positive blood test, are willing to dedicate a year to the program, and will maintain food logs and track their glucose readings.

“It is about lifestyle changes,” Simmons said. “The wonderful thing is that it prevents diabetes through weight management and dietary controls. Another attractive feature of the program is that it provides support by being offered in a group setting.”

Senior Services is required to submit an evaluation of the program to the CDC every 12 months, in addition to monitoring and evaluating participant data.

The weekly class meets at 11 a.m. Thursday at Senior Services, 647 Gas Valley Road. For more information, call 304-564-3801 or 304-387-3251.
