EAST LIVERPOOL – On Aug. 12, the Dawson Funeral Home will open its doors for the next in a series of informative sessions titled “Dawsons Cares,” which are open to the public.

At this meeting, attorney Timothy R. Brookes will address the “Trials and Tribulations of Probate Practice.” Brookes stresses the importance of planning ahead, saying there are many issues no one likes to talk about in advance of need. He will primarily be discussing a common sense approach to taking advantage of Ohio’s liberal probate avoidance laws.

Brookes is an East Liverpool native and a 1972 graduate of East Liverpool High School. Following his graduation from Kent State University, he received his juris doctorate from the Ohio State University College of Law in 1979 and has been in private practice ever since. Specializing mainly in real estate and probate work, he and his wife, Linda, maintain their office in downtown East Liverpool. He has been an acting judge since 1987, and has served as counsel for the Port Authority since 2001.

As president of the East Liverpool Historical Society, he has overseen the complete renovation of the Thompson House and often runs tours of the historical building. In his spare time, he enjoys speaking about Civil War history and Pretty Boy Floyd, as well as other local history.

LISBON – Help Hotline Crisis Center, available for information, referral, and crisis intervention, is offering free training classes for those interested in volunteering for the 24-hour hotline.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife will do an electroshocking demonstration at 3 p.m. to show the many fish species that live in the stream.

EAST LIVERPOOL – Catholic Charities Senior Center’s annual Champagne Brunch and Recognition Banquet is noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Senior Center, East Fourth Street, East Liverpool.

All proceeds go toward the Center’s operations. Tickets are $15 per person. Menu includes chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, homemade noodles, green beans, tossed salad, dinner rolls, mousse, cake, ice tea, coffee and champagne punch.

This fundraising event helps to provide daily delivery of meals, socialization and education to the entire community, especially the senior population. The workshop will be presented by Kathy Cattrell and Jim Kerr, and participants will be able to assist in collecting and identifying macroinvertebrates from Beaver Creek. Other water quality tests will be completed as well. Participants should meet by the iron bridge down in the park, and should wear boots or old shoes if they want to get in the stream to help collect samples.

EAST LIVERPOOL – The Justin Knapp Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser is Saturday at United Brethren Dream Center, Grandview Avenue. Beginning at 2 p.m., craft and vendor tables will have items for sale and donated items from local businesses and supporters will be offered by way of a silent auction. A concert featuring Peggy (Bowersock) Bouscher, Rebecca (Gadd) Williams, Ally Kopp, and Gracie LaScola will begin at 7 p.m. A free will offering will be accepted.

The scholarship has been set up by East Liverpool City Schools Education and Scholarship Fund to help further the education of deserving students. All proceeds will go toward fully endowing the scholarship which will be given in perpetuity in Justin’s memory.

Justin was a gifted and talented, 25 year old man, who graduated Valedictorian of the East Liverpool High School Class of 2007. He was active in track, basketball, band, National Honor Society, and Thespians. Justin went on to attend Youngstown State University and NEOUCOM to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. Justin tragically lost his life on Aug. 1, 2013 in a motorcycle accident. Your support to this endeavor will be greatly appreciated.
