County out of farm market vouchers

NEW CUMBERLAND – Farmer’s market vouchers for Hancock County senior citizens were in short supply this year, said E. Mark Knabenshue, executive director of Hancock County Senior Services.

“We’re out,” Knabenshue said. “There won’t be any more until next year.”

Senior centers around West Virginia received fewer voucher booklets from the U.S. Department of Agriculture this year because, in the past, counties did not redeem all the vouchers, he said.

“The USDA cut back on the number sent to each county’s senior service agency,” he said. “I don’t blame them. Everything has a cost associated with it.”

Knabenshue said the voucher packet’s value was increased from $20 to $30.

Hancock County Senior Services received 165 packets this year, compared to 250 last year, and distributed all of them by July 17, he said.

Hancock County operates two farmer’s markets where senior citizens can redeem their coupons – one on Penco Road in Weirton and one in New Manchester.
